Dental crowns, sometimes called dental caps or tooth caps, are a type of restoration that we offer at our Rockford office to fully cup over a damaged tooth. We might recommend placing a dental crown if you need to protect a weak tooth that is at risk of cracking, restore an already broken tooth, cover and support a tooth that has a large existing filling, secure a dental bridge in place, cover misshapen or discolored teeth, or cover a dental implant.
In the first step of the procedure, Dr. Varland will make an impression of your tooth. This impression will be sent to a dental laboratory where your dental crown will be crafted. Dr. Varland will give you a temporary crown to wear while you wait for your perfectly-fitted crown to be ready, typically about two weeks. Once your dental crown had been made, you will return to our Rockford office, where Dr. Varland will firmly cement it onto your tooth. The result is a resilient and natural-looking smile. The restored function and beauty of your smile will last for many years with dental crowns.
Our Rockford Patients often choose to undergo one of our Free Whitening For Life procedures prior to having a dental crown placed, so that their teeth will be a uniform shade of white.

Beyond the obvious gaps in your smile, a missing tooth can result in a multitude of serious dental problems. Remaining teeth will begin to drift out of alignment, and that can lead to a change in your bite, tooth decay, gum disease, migraine headaches, and quite possibly the loss of additional teeth. Clearly, it is important to stabilize the mouth’s structure when a tooth is lost. We can do this by providing a dental bridge at our Rockford office. A dental bridge is a false tooth or a series of teeth fused between two porcelain crowns to bridge the gap (hence the name) where a tooth or several teeth are missing.
On your first visit, Dr. Varland will prepare the anchor teeth on either side of the missing tooth for dental crowns, by removing a small amount of enamel. Then an impression of your teeth will be taken and sent to a dental lab, where it will be used to model the crowns, bridge, and false tooth. Dr. Varland will provide you a temporary bridge to protect your teeth and gums while you wait for your permanent dental bridge. When you return to our Rockford office for your second visit, the temporary bridge will be removed and a permanent bridge will be placed. Dr. Varland will check to make sure the dental bridge is a perfect fit.
Many of our patients have benefited from the restored ability to speak and eat that dental bridges provide. If you are interested in dental bridges and live near Rockford, contact our cosmetic dentistry practice today.

Available in both partial and full versions, modern dentures provided at our Rockford office are fabricated from porcelain, plastic or a combination of the two materials, serving as a removable prosthetic option for patients who have lost a significant number of teeth. Full dentures replace all of the upper or lower teeth while partial dentures fill in for missing portions of a person’s smile. The goal is to fit patients with dentures that are carefully crafted to represent the natural color, shape, size, and contour of the patient’s smile. Properly fitted dentures can also diminish the sunken appearance that results from extensive tooth loss.
Crafting your dentures begins with making a wax impression of your mouth. In some cases, it is necessary to remove one or more teeth to improve the fit and stability of your dentures. After your dentures are fabricated, you will return to our Rockford office for adjustment and placement of your dentures. Dr. Varland will make sure the color, shape, and fit of your dentures are just right. Our Rockford-area patients enjoy improved ability to speak and eat, in addition to the natural appearance and terrific smile that dentures provide.

The literal meaning of the word periodontal is “around the tooth.” Periodontal care therefore encompasses the prevention and treatment of gum disease, a bacterial infection that preys not only on the gums but also the bone that supports the teeth. We know that good periodontal care prevents adult tooth loss, which is why Dr. Varland takes it very seriously. New research suggests a link between periodontal disease and more severe problems such as diabetes, heart disease, and respiratory disease.

Though everyone suffers from this embarrassing problem on occasion, chronic bad breath could hint at more serious health problems. Regular dental cleanings and examinations are the first steps toward managing bad breath. Our dental hygienists can also help you combat this problem by treating your tongue with a tongue scraper and an anti-bacterial gel that neutralizes the bacteria that cause odor.

Oftentimes, patients are unaware of the medical consequences of snoring and sleep apnea (a condition that causes breathing to stop or become shallow during sleep). However, these sleeping disorders can take a toll on a person’s health, with consequences that range from simple fatigue to severe headaches and even poor memory function. We offer treatment in the form of appliances that fit inside the mouth, keeping your airway clear as you sleep. Learn about our various sleep apnea treatments.

As a family-oriented practice, we look forward to introducing your child to good, solid oral health habits. We encourage parents to bring their children in for their first dental visit as early as possible, rather than waiting until a problem occurs. Our friendly staff is committed to treating all of our patients in a gentle and positive atmosphere that will make them look forward to their next visit.

These painful mouth sores, which appear as whitish circles ringed in red, often vanish without treatment in a week or so. However, if the sores are extremely large and painful, or if they linger for more than two weeks, then Dr. Varland can prescribe an antimicrobial mouth rinse, ointment, or other remedy to reduce the inflammation.

More sophisticated tools and materials make it easier for us to do our job. More importantly, they enable us to make your trip to the dentist’s office more pleasant than in years past. Dr. Varland and his staff are proud to offer the OralCDx® Brush Biopsy and The Wand by CompuDent™ to all patients who want to reap the benefits of dentistry’s latest advancements.

We are proud to offer the following technology:
Used to test potentially cancerous or precancerous spots in the mouth, this simple biopsy procedure is easy enough that we can perform it on patients as they sit in the dentist’s chair. During the procedure, a small rotating circular brush is applied to the area in question, picking up cellular material that we can send to the lab. Until OralCDx®'s Oral Brush Biopsy became available, dentists had no method for easily and painlessly testing harmless-looking spots for malignancy. The new procedure has not only spared thousands of patients from disfiguring surgery but also saved hundreds of lives.

If you are one of those patients for whom the mere thought of getting a shot in the mouth is worse than the injection itself, we offer this computerized system that does the job of the traditional needle, minus the trauma of seeing a dentist descend upon you with a syringe. Consisting of a small needle that looks like a pen and is operated by a foot pedal, The Wand allows Dr. Varland to infuse local anesthetic into the mouth at a slow and highly controlled rate, eliminating the discomfort that occurs any time liquid surges into tissue. Plus, The Wand’s injections are preceded by a drop of anesthetic that numbs the tissue before the needle tip even touches the skin.

With the new focus on conservative dentistry, those in our profession are making every effort to catch problems at their earliest and most treatable phases. One way we do this is through early cavity detection with KaVo DIAGNOdent® —because even the tiniest imperfection has the potential to become a big problem later on.
We use the KaVo DIAGNOdent® laser to first take a baseline reading of healthy tooth material. Then, we aim the laser at the rest of your mouth where fluorescent light will indicate potential cavities amid the grooves, curves and fine lines of your otherwise healthy-looking teeth. A quick and pain-free procedure, cavity detection with KaVo DIAGNOdent® eliminates the need for x-rays. And because it catches problems at such an early state, correction is often just a matter of lightly removing decay.
