Porcelain Veneers

We are pleased to provide porcelain veneers for our Rockford patients who are unhappy with the color or configuration of their teeth. These thin yet resilient porcelain sheaths are bonded directly onto the tooth to achieve a smile that is both stunning and natural. They’re easy to apply, long-lasting, and highly resistant to stains. Not only that, but because porcelain veneers are translucent, they reflect light in much the same way that real teeth do – so nobody need ever know that the dazzling white smile you’re flashing is a product of advanced cosmetic dentistry.

Porcelain veneers can be placed on only one of your teeth, or all of your teeth at once, depending on your case. First, Dr. Varland will lightly trim the tooth’s surface, typically removing no more than the thickness of an eggshell, so that the overall size of the tooth will not be noticeably larger once the veneer is in place. Next, Dr. Varland will make an exact impression. During the week or so that you wait for the veneer to be created using this impression, you may need to wear a temporary veneer. Once your porcelain veneer is ready, you will return to our Rockford office and the veneer will be firmly bonded to your tooth.

In addition to traditional two-dimensional veneers, Dr. Varland offers 360° porcelain dental crowns at his office that fit securely over damaged teeth to hide broken, discolored, or malformed teeth.

Tooth-colored Fillings

Dentists have used silver amalgam fillings for many years, but recent concerns about mercury toxicity – as well as the fact that large metal fillings compromise a tooth’s strength over time – have sent those in our profession in search of alternative materials to fill cavities. Made of composite resins that adhere to the tooth, tooth-colored fillings at our Rockford office form a tight bond that actually prevents bacteria from attacking the tooth. Also, since the white material we use can fit more easily into a small space, you don’t have to wait for a cavity to grow larger before you get your tooth-colored fillings. Our patients who currently have silver fillings can easily have them replaced with a new composite filling material that is not only more attractive and natural looking, but also stronger and more durable.

Restoring a tooth with a tooth-colored filling is similar to the procedure for traditional fillings. First, Dr. Varland will remove any decay and prepare the tooth to receive the tooth-colored composite. Next, the composite material is placed into the cavity in layers and hardened with a special curing light. Once the process is over, the filling will be a perfect fit with the tooth. The filling is then polished. Tooth-colored fillings provided at our Rockford office blend beautifully with the surrounding teeth, creating a bright, healthy-looking smile.

Dental Bonding

If you have chipped, cracked, uneven, or discolored teeth, or if you have small gaps between your teeth, then you might be a candidate for dental bonding. This process uses a composite resin filling that’s tinted to match your natural tooth color. During this quick, one-visit procedure, the dentist applies a thin coating of this material to the tooth’s surface and then molds the composite – similar to how a sculptor works with clay – to cover any flaws. Afterwards, a high-intensity light is shone on the bonded tooth until the surface hardens.
